Driving through the middle

Driving through "the middle" to Alice Springs is all new to us. It's flat with grassland vegetation for all the cattle on the stations to survive, water is available from artesian wells, winds can build up, the temperature falls at this time of the year, especially at nights ......and diesel is a fortune.
It is a strange feeling knowing we are actually right in the centre of the continent far away from any beach and very close to desert. There are some pretty strange pubs along the way too!
One night we stayed at Banka Banka station -no power, but lovely green grass and another night we stopped in a free stop where we were completely on our own. Also no power, and goodness me,when the sun set, we froze! We had forgotten what winter is like. We fished out our spare doona and blankets from the bowels of the caravan very quickly. The sunset and dawn the next morning was rather magical. The beauty and silence of being in the "middle" definitely made up for the cold!
