In the mountains

We drove to a beautiful town, Tumut, where we stayed in a gorgeous, treed park right on the Tumut River. We decided that we would explore the northern area of the Mt Kosciuszko National park before driving down to Khancoban where we explored the southern section. At Khancoban we stayed right on the edge of a "pondage" which was also absolutely beautiful.

Chris was fascinated by the Snowy Hydro power stations, dams and spill overs and I just loved the mountain scenery, lakes and flowers. We had a picnic lunch at Cabramurra - Australia's highest town. All over that area are masses and masses of snow gums that were burnt in a devastating bush fire in 2003 which gives the landscape a very eerie end of world appearance.

We drove to Thredbo where we caught the chair lift to a spot half way up Mt Kosciuszko to see the views. There was still a little bit of snow left on the mountains and if rain and strong winds weren't threatening we would have walked 4kms to the first view point. It's 13 kms to the very top. Maybe another time!

I was so glad to be able to drive through the mountains even though we shared the road with hundreds of motorcyclists who were on a charity run. It must be very beautiful during the snow season. At least we didn't need snow chains!
