Gloucester

Before finally travelling up the coast I was determined to drive through the Barrington Tops which is declared a world heritage area.  From the very top we could see the Hunter Valley in all its glory. It had snowed 2 weeks before we arrived and we knew that it would be cold but we don't mind cold. The unsealed roads were very muddy though. We walked through an amazing Antarctic Beech forest where the cold and damp allowed the moss to cover large parts of the tree trunks and branches. It felt like walking through Lord of the Rings territory. It took us a whole day to do our exploring and walking. I wanted to see Gloucester Falls but the road was bad and it was getting too late - another time! We did get to drive to the Barrington Tops!
We are so lucky to be travelling out of season as everywhere we go the "publique" are nowhere to be seen.

We stayed in the small town of Gloucester - a gateway to the Barrington Tops. The caravan park, at the foot of the moutains, was just perfect. We had acres of rolling lawns, views of the mountains and no-one close by.....and it wasn't too cold at all, just rolling mists each morning we woke up.

We stayed for 3 days exploring other areas around Gloucester as well. The hills, valleys and scenery were all just beautiful. Around each bend as we were driving were just more and more beautiful sights. The cows in the area stood around grazing in metre high, lush, green grass. (Missed a photo but what lucky cows.) Everything was picture postcard beautiful.
We loved our drive up to Wingham, a small, historic town about 60 kms east of Gloucester. We found a great place to have lunch - a change from our daily picnic - and then went walking through a very interesting area that is the home to a colony of Grey-headed Flying Foxes.. What a noise they made. It was amazing to see how this tiny area had been protected for their survival. All other land had been cleared for humans.
We are continually surprised by all the lovely places there are to see in NSW.
