Finch Hatton

We discovered Finch Hatton in 2010 and loved it. It is a tiny place at the foot of the Eungella Range about 350km from Agnes Waters. It is surrounded by acres of ripened cane crops with the mountains in the distance. We are able to park our caravan at the showgrounds with as much space as we need around us. Showgrounds in country towns are always a good option for a place to stay. We also seem to meet very nice fellow travellers in all types of living quarters - buses, huge 5th wheelers, old and newer caravans, camper vans and tents. We love fields for camping!
We'd sit here in the sun.

The creek behind the showground.

A tree in the main street.

Our field....another one!
In the Eungella National Park is the Finch Hatton gorge. We decided to climb to the top. We made it....a lot of steep climbing and many, many steps...and a creek to cross! We were so proud of ourselves, Shirley..... As we climb we always think of you!!! It was a beautiful hike through the cool rain forest type terrain. Took us a couple f hours.

The creek.

Both got our shoes soaked.

The gorge was around the bend...ha, ha....so couldn't see the full effect.

2 young ones just scampered over to the other side...in their slip slops....
they saw  the full drop of the gorge!! We didn't want to slip!!!

20km out of Finch Hatton is the small village of Eungella. It is high up the top of the Eungella Range. As we wanted to see the platypuses that start swimming down Broken River at dusk we made our trip up to the village in the late afternoon. The views from the top are magnificent but the shadows cast by the setting sun didn't allow for very clear photos. We did see the platypuses.....such tiny little things with their duck bills. There were a few other people spotting platypuses.....it's like being in a church....everyone whispers as they wait for a platypus!
Winding its way through the mountain.

A great view from the top.

Waiting!

So lucky to see the platypus.

A much clearer view.

The sunset on our way down the mountain.

We loved it here.
